Vigils for Racial Justice
After the death of George Floyd at the knee of a Minneapolis police officer, several weeks of protests erupted in Philadelphia – as across the nation. In the northwest Mt Airy and Germantown neighborhoods, the interfaith clergy organized two evening vigils calling citizens of conscience to action. During the events, participants were asked to kneel in silence for a seemingly interminable 8 minutes and 46 seconds – the length of time that the officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck.
