Juneteenth 2021 & 2022
The day after President Biden signed into law Juneteenth National Independence Day, commemorating the final 1865 freeing of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, a fifteenth annual Juneteenth celebration was held in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. The event featured booths with local vendors of crafts and community organizations, educational programs, musical entertainment, and several theatrical presentations. At the historical Johnson House, actor Millicent Sparks brought to life Harriet Tubman, the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad, a Civil War spy and Suffragist (pictured in head scarf below).
In 2022, the Juneteenth celebration featured members of the 3rd Regiment Infantry United States Colored Troops Civil War Re-enactors reading the Galveston Declaration.
