In June 2021, the Black Lives Matter sign of the Germantown Jewish Centre, in the Mt Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, was vandalized, with the word “Black” replaced by the word “Jewish.” The revised slogan also appeared in several additional places nearby. The generally progressive Jewish population of the community was deeply disturbed by the apparently racist act and swiftly called for a demonstration in support of BLM. Speakers and performers in front of the refreshed sign included members and leaders of numerous nearby organizations and synagogues, including Jews of All Hues, GJC, Mishkan Shalom, P’nai Or Philadelphia, Tikkun Olam Havurah, and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.
