God is in the details;
Less is more.– Mies van der Rohe
God is in the Details: Images for Contemplation is a set of nineteen high-resolution digital photographs, mostly drawn from nature – and intentionally paired – meant for sustained contemplation.
The grayscale values abstract from the particulars of color, intensify the mood, and simplify and lend a timeless quality to the image. In this set, I am particularly indebted to the work of the modernist straight (as opposed to pictorial) photographers of the mid-twentieth century Group f/64, especially Edward Weston’s monumental close-ups of seashells and vegetables, and Imogen Cunningham’s still life and plant studies, which bring out the rich textures of their sculpture-like forms.
